Several fads come and go as I have seen in my chiropractic office and the newest is the vitamin B12 shot for losing weight. Weight loss consumes many people’s lives so I get asked my opinion on the lastest diet craze. I patiently eloborate about the non substantiated evidence concerning B12, but off they run to the MD without heeding my advice. I have often wondered what is explained to the patients which makes them go back week after week for their shot. The MD puts them on a low calorie diet and weighs them every visit and is told to start some form of exercise program. I Explain to my patients that the exercise program and low calorie diet is what causes them to lose weight, not the B12 shot.
What does vitamin B12 really do? Vitamin B12 is excellent for increasing the metabolism and in return will help burn more fat. This increase in energy is why most consumers opt for the shot in the first place. Some people with certain conditions like chrons disease are prescribed the B12 shot because their body can not absorb it properly on its own and without the shot is subject to chronic fatigue.
Vitamin B12 also aids in producing red blood cells. Red blood cells are important to the body’s function. They pick up oxygen from the lungs and carry oxygen to all the other cells in the body. This is imperative because the cells use oxygen to complete their functions in your system. Without the needed oxygen, this will create add stress on your heart and the body will feel extremely tired.
This wonder vitamin also helps with mental acuteness. It helps the person stay more focused on their tasks at hand.
Another important function of vitamin B12 is keeping your nerves healthy. Without vitamin B12 to produce the myelin around your nerves, they would be subject to damage from everyday living conditions.
Every wonder what chemical helps produce that “feel good” feeling? It is called serotonin. Vitamin B12 assists in the production of serotonin to give you a positive attitude.
The fact that our bodies need B12 can not be disputed. But to have respected physicians to maintain it promotes weight loss? When there are no studies to corroborate this claim.  How can consumers not realize it is the reduced calorie intake and exercise which really produces the loss of weight? Why pay a couple hundred dollars a month when there are better options available? Nowadays, consumers are so desperate to lose weight that they will try anything to help accomplish this feat.
