Too often lower back pain is due to an injury such as trauma from pulled or torn tissue. It is likely that the trauma would occur on one side or the other. Moving heavy furniture for example may cause you to twist in an unnatural way. Very likely, you could pull or tear a muscle in the lower left side of your back. In the process of healing, scar tissue is formed. This tissue is weaker than the tissue surrounding it so when stress occurs again in the general area, the scar tissue is likely to be injured again. Repeat injuries to certain areas are common causing lower left back pain to be experienced over and over again.
Be that as it may, more serious conditions like kidney stones and kidney infection could cause lower left back pain so sharp and distinct that it is unlikely to be relieved with massage or exercise. Your kidneys are located on either side of the spine in the lower back. An infection there can be felt on either right or left side, around the hip and near the groin. It can also be too sensitive to touch and can cause nausea, fever and illness. Herniated or slipped disc and Sciatica also give you similar symptoms. If your lower left back pain causes you to feel like this, see a specialist as soon as possible to rule out any serious problems.
In many cases, this pain is caused by a pull or tear of the muscles, tendons or ligaments of the lower left area of the back. Microscopic tears in the tissue can trigger inflammation and even cause muscles to spasm, intensifying the pain in the lower left back.
There is good news, however. Treating lower left back pain can be quite simple.
Reduce your level of activity. Because it is in your left side, do not favor your left side more than the right. This will lead to more injury in the future because it creates an unnatural balance of muscle. Do not lie in bed for over 48 hours to avoid weakening the muscles and increase the chances of recurring lower left back pain. Continue with your non-strenuous daily activities if that’s possible. Apply ice for the first 24 to 48 hours to reduce swelling. Then switch to heat pads in order to increase blood flow to the painful area. The warmth will help get circulation back into the injured area and reduce inflammation. Take anti-inflammatory medication like Tylenol. Start light stretching and exercise after a few days.If you fear re-injury that prevents you from performing normal functions, see a specialist. You may find a posture corrective brace will really help. Posture braces work to remind your body to stand up straight more often.
The best treatment for lower left back pain would be preventing it from happening, right? Start with good posture. Many of us get lower left back pain because we tend to tilt or lean to one side while standing. Attempt maintaining good posture continously for one month to replace old slouching habits with new healthy ones. Make it second nature to you. Good posture alone can relieve lower left back pain.
Next, discipline your sleeping position. If you sleep in positions that pull or create stress on your lower left back area, be aware of the damage you are creating. Sleep on your side. Keep a pillow between your legs to help align your spine. If you need to lie on your back, put a pillow beneath your knees to unstress your lower back. Be conscious about pillows as they may shift during the night. Never sleep on your stomach. To help releive lower left back pain, a couple days bed rest may be a good idea. Resting more than two, however, can do you more harm than good. Too much rest weakens the muscles and makes them prone to lower left back pain.
Do exercises and stretching that increase muscle strength and relieve your lower left back pain. Posture exercises are very important to your health. Strengthen your core with Yoga and significantly reduce lower back pain on either side. Though the injury is on the left, avoid exercises that favor one side over the other. Don’t forget to warm up before you stretch and exercise.
Ensure your work area is ergonomically suitable for your back. Work surface should be high enough for you. Computer monitor should also be high enough to keep you from hunching your back or rounding your shoulders. Rest your feet comfortably on the floor. Keep your knees slightly higher than your hips while sitting. You should have a straight back chair with good lumbar support. Stand up and walk around or stretch every hour. Lift with your legs and not your back. When you lift a heavy object, keep it as close to your body as much as possible. Never lift objects with your arms extended nor twist as you lift. For sure this will cause lower left back pain.
Being overweight, puts unnecessary stress on your lower back. Keep proper nutrition and diet. Less weight keeps your lower back muscles from working overtime. Smokers are almost twice as likely to suffer back pain than those who do not.
Dont let stress manage you. Stress can cause you to injure more easily. Many doctors believe stress to be one of the most common causes for back pain. Reduce stress in your life and your lower left back pain will reduce as well.
