Pelvic Pain Causes

Pelvic or lower abdominal pain that lasts for six months or more is generally known as Chronic Pelvic Pain or CPP. For many women, the pain comes and goes and may be associated with their menstrual cycles, and even confused with PMS. For other women, the pain is constant and may affect normal daily living – disrupting relationships withloved ones, limiting physical and/or sexual activity and affecting their ability to deal with mundane responsibilities.
The causes of chronic pelvic pain are sometimes unclear. Some conditions that may cause chronic pelvic pain include:
- Endometriosis – abnormal growth of the endometrial tissue (the uterine lining) in other parts of the body (such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries, other abdominal organs )
- Uterine fibroids – non-cancerous tumors in the uterus
- Scar tissue – the result of previous abdominal surgery
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease – inflammation or infection of the pelvic organs (such as the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries) as a result of the presence of bacteria
- Bowel or Urinary Tract Diseases – including Irritable Bowel Syndrome or urinary tract infections
- Emotional – usually experienced by women who have been the victims of sexual or physical assault
Locating the underlying cause of CPP is often a matter of trial and error. Sometimes, no cause for the pain is discovered and treating it is limited to pain management. A number of published case studies have shown the positive effects that chiropractic adjustments have had on women suffering from chronic pelvic pain. One study found a seventy % reduction in symptoms after just six weeks of chiropractic care. Other studies point to lower sacral nerve root impairment in chronic pelvic pain; chiropractic care may relieve this impairment and, therefore, the CPP symptoms.
