Foods Causing Joint Pain

Joint pain and discomfort can be caused by various things, including cancer, gout and arthritis. However, some people are surprised to discover that there are also foods that can cause joint pain, and understanding what these are can help if you routinely suffer from aching joints. Being able to identify these foods is especially important of you suffer from food allergies or digestive problems. You can monitor your own diet to potentially identify foods causing joint pain, or request a blood test from your doctor.

Two of the biggest causes of pain in the joints are animal fat and animal protein. If you are sensitive to animal protein, your body is unable to produce antibodies which are able to fight the antigen complexes present in the fat; the antigens then become concentrated around the body’s tissues and joints, leading to inflammation and discomfort. In particular, too much red meat, such as beef, in the diet can contribute to joint pain. You should also avoid eating small game animals.

However, it isn’t just red meat that can lead to sore joints, and there are several other foods causing joint pain and inflammation. In general, you should try to avoid eating too much processed food, fast food and fried foods, as well as cutting down on sugar, in both foods and carbonated drinks. Sugar in any form is one of the leading causes of joint pain; other foods causing joint pain include white flour, lard and butter, vegetable oil, and potato chips with their high amounts of trans fats.

Many dairy products are among those foods causing joint pain and inflammation, and the pain and inflammation can be made worse for anyone who suffers from a milk allergy, because of the increased histamine in the body. Using a milk or dairy substitute wherever possible is one solution. Soreness and inflammation around the joints can also frequently be caused by seafood, including clams, lobster, shrimp and crabs, as well as several types of fish. If you have a seafood allergy, you should also check the manufacturer’s ingredients carefully to make sure that a food product does not include any fish protein.

Some things that we instinctively think of as being healthy are actually foods that can cause joint pain. If you suffer from sore joints you may want to limit your consumption of certain vegetables such as cauliflower, asparagus, peas and spinach. Wheat bran and oatmeal can also lead to aching and sore joints. Eggplant, tomatoes and chili are all inflammatory foods and can cause joint pain. If you drink a lot of beer or caffeine, cutting back can also help you to enjoy less pain in your joints.

Everything in moderation as the saying goes, and whereas most of us find it impossible to completely eliminate certain foods from our diet, cutting down on those foods that cause pain is certainly recommended. As a general rule, a diet with an emphasis on natural and whole foods is a better option, rather than too many artificial, processed foods.
